[English] Rare French Antique 18K Solid Gold Perpignan Garnet Cross Pendant
This is a highly rare and exquisite antique "Perpignan Garnet" cross pendant, crafted in the South of France during the 19th century.
As a retired geologist and garnet collector, I guarantee its authenticity. It features the traditional Perpignan technique: rose-cut garnets set in 18K solid gold closed settings with red foil backing. This ancient technique, utilizing optical reflection similar to modern reflectors, creates a mesmerizing, fiery deep red glow. Compared to the "frozen lake" stillness of flat-cut garnets (see comparison photos), the Perpignan rose-cut exhibits a vibrant, "living" luster and wet appearance.
[Hallmarks & Scientific Testing] Clearly hallmarked with the French "Eagle's Head" on the bail, guaranteeing 18K solid gold. Additionally tested via XRF analysis, confirming the exact 18K gold purity: Au 75.1% / Cu 11.8% / Ag 11.6%.
[Details] Size: approx. 34.7 mm x 23.0 mm x 4.3 mm Largest stone: approx. 5.5 mm in diameter Weight: approx. 2.52 g
[Condition] In excellent antique condition. The garnets are beautiful with natural inclusions, and the foil backing remains vibrant. *Please note: There is a noticeable dent on the back (see photos 3 & 4), but it is not visible from the front. This dent is actually a characteristic of authentic Perpignan garnet jewelry. They were crafted using very thin sheets of 18K yellow gold, which naturally makes them prone to denting over time. The fact that it weighs only 2.52g despite its size and high-karat gold content is proof of this delicate, thin construction.
