紙ジャケット仕様でございますが、世界共通使用初回リリース時の仕様を再現したものでございますが、英米リリース時のインナースリーヴを再現という優れものでございます。
内容は言わずもがな。
ラインナップは不動の名手トリオ、Geddy Lee(Vo、Syn、Bass Pedal Syn)、Alex Lifeson(G、Bass Pedal Syn)、Neil Peart(Ds、Per)となります。
制作・録音はイギリス・ウェールズ”Rockfield Studio”でございますが、エンジニアがTerry Brownの他にかのPat Moranが関与致しております。
(ex-Spring、後にIan Gillan Band参加、Robert Plantプロデュース、Ozzy Osbourne”Ultimate Sin”参加等)
Rush初のイギリス制作となる作品となります。
Led Zeppelin影響下のハードロック路線で始まったRushでございますが、Neil Peart加入を挟み2nd”Fly by Night”以降アートロック路線にも足を踏み入れ、3rd”Caress of Steel”での実験性を経て大作主義前作”２１１２”が大好評、
初のライヴ盤”All the World's a Stage”を挟み制作された作品でございます。
演奏面の著しい向上だけでなく音楽性の洗練度や応用性を増した事もあり、それを音楽性に強く生かした感がございます。
また、シンセ類等の導入が本格的に始まった作品でもございます。
リズムの巧みさが生かされるようになった事もあり大作主義楽曲の強引な展開が弱まりスムースな楽曲進行が聴かれますが、未だ演奏面や音楽性が古典派ハード路線の音楽性が強いものである事がミソ。
当時はStyx、Kansas等といったプログレ/ハード路線のバンドが成功を収めており、それに伴い注目を浴びた感がございます。
但し、音楽性のポピュラーさは案外薄めでゴツゴツしたハードロック感覚強めという事がミソ。垢抜けなさもあるのでしょうか？それらが後に勃興するNWOBHMからの支持の篤さにも繋がる感がございます。
古典テーマ的な歌詞が揃いますが以前よりも歌詞の解り易さが進んだ感があり、Neil Peartが次を見据えつつある事がお分かりになられると存じます。
また”音楽家とは聴衆を心へと誘うものである”というラッシュ(というかNeil Peart)のテーマである名曲”Closer to the Heart”、音楽性変貌以後にも共に取り上げられる大作主義名曲”Xanadu”が登場。
Neil Peartには異色の名ラヴ・ソング(と言えますでしょうか......)”Madrigal”という穏やかで内省的な楽曲もあり、音楽性の幅広さが見受けられるものでございます。
前作以上の成功を収める作品となります............................................................
当時はWeather Report等のジャズ／フュージョン/クロスオーヴァー系が非常な注目を浴び、ポピュラー系ロックでも影響やその系統のミュージシャンの積極起用が見受けられており、この時代のRushは技術面等の向上が著しい時代。
後々にも見られますが、時代性を積極的に取り込み自らの音楽性に融合し音楽的な化学反応を愉しみたがる傾向にあるこのバンドでございます。
大作主義楽曲”Cygnus X-1”の続編という制約が付きまとい創作面で非常な困難が伴い、以後はコンパクトな音楽性を指向する事になるきっかけとなった事で知られる次作”Hemispheres”。
(その引き換えに驚愕の成功を収めますが.......)
その制作時にそのリズムを含めた綿密さと洗練の音楽性を大きく取り込んだ事が契機となりバンド自身の音楽性が一気に変貌を果たし、後の大成功の礎を築く事となります..................................................
今作は初期の集大成でもあり、音楽性の橋渡し的とも言えますでしょうか.......................................................
