芽ぶきの頃の若葉が茶色で老婆に見立てたことから。

【商品情報】
綺麗な緑が特徴で生垣によく使われる樹種です。カシ類ではもっとも強い刈り込みに耐えます。潮風や大気汚染にも強い木です。秋になるとかわいい帽子をかぶったドングリを10月ごろに実らせます。一年中緑色の綺麗な葉が付いています。風に強く防火性も高いために、古来から家を守る為に生垣や防風林に使われたりします。そのまま伸ばすと不整形になります。

【育て方】
適湿な土地を好みますが、乾燥にもよく耐えます。煙害や潮風にも強く植える場所を選びません。日陰でも成長します。よく伸びますので強い剪定を行っても大丈夫です。まっすぐ伸びにくいので高さを出す場合支柱をしてあげた方が理想的です。
